Fast food worker’s lieu day victory Hornby Wendy’s employee gets win for hospo staff By Emily O’Connell A HORNBY woman has won a three-year battle with a fast food company to ensure employees across the country get their days in lieu. Wendy’s, which has 23 outlets in New Zealand, including one in Hereford St and in Hornby, has breached two sections of the Holidays Act 2003. Wendy’s employee Rose Williams went to the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment three years ago with the lieu day issue after she had been working at the Hornby restaurant for a year. Mrs Williams said Wendy’s staff were not being given a lieu day after working on a public holiday. She told Western News it feels “pretty good” to win the case. Unite Union, of which Mrs Williams is a delegate, has estimated it would cost Wendy’s $1.6 million to pay back employees’ leiu days. MBIE senior labour inspector

Wendy’s has also been ordered to do the same for all other restaurants across the country backdated to July 1, 2012. Unite Union national secretary Gerard Hehir said it was “very happy” with the result. “We think it has significance beyond our dispute with Wendy’s actually,” he said. Mr Hehir said it’s hard to establish what would be a person’s normal working day in hospitality because of their variable shift work. “The problem we have with Wendy’s is they said no-one was entitled to one [an alternative holiday] at all, because hours changed occasionally,” Mr Hehir said. He admired how tenacious Mrs Williams was throughout the trial. Mrs Williams left a job at Countdown to raise her son Josh after her husband Murray died in a speedway crash 14 years ago. She said her late husband was racing a sidecar at Ruapuna Speedway when he crashed and died instantly. She started working at Hornby Wendy’s four years ago. She said public holidays are the restaurant’s busiest days and it wasn’t fair to not get a day in lieu for working them. She plans to continue working at Wendy’s and has not encountered any problems while standing up for her rights. Wendy’s head office could not respond to Western News before deadline yesterday.

WHAT A terrific fight Rose Williams (page 1) had put up against fast food giant Wendy’s. Her battle will see Wendy’s staff across New Zealand backpaid for owed days in lieu. Rose took her case Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment claiming Wendy’s were not honouring their lieu day committments. And she’s won. It will mean Wendy’s staff across the country will share in about $1.6 million in owed pay. Rose is no stranger to adversity – her husband Murray was killed in a speedway crash, and she’s had to work hard to keep her household going. Great stuff Rose. Cr Galloway said the timing for the policy hadn’t been determined. “Such a policy would contain a number of conditions where restrictions can be considered, such as the number and type of heavy vehicles using the street,” she said. Cr Galloway said she’s pleased the city council will now have the tools it needs to address speed and heavy vehicle traffic issues. She said it will make residential streets safer for walking and biking. Wigram MP Megan Woods said it was a good first step. “Now we have to work to finalise the process, consult with local people and hopefully get the bylaw applied to Lodestar Ave,” Dr Woods said. Lady Wigram Retirement Village residents say they are often woken at 4.30am. They have been lobbying for bylaw to ban trucks on Lodestar Ave since April when they met with Cr Galloway and Dr Woods. For many workers, Lodestar Ave is a short cut to work sites in the area. The Traffic and Parking Bylaw 2017 will come into effect from March 1.

Support for parents and kids Housing New Zealand tenancy manager Zoe Wood lives and works in the Hei Hei and Broomfield area. She talks about how a group she started, has made a big difference in the community I manage tenancies and properties in the Broomfield and Hei Hei areas and recently came up with an idea to engage with parents and children in that part of the city. While there appeared to be a lot on offer for over 60s in the area, I wasn’t able to find much in terms of support and socialising for parents and carers of young children. Community development worker Tracey Buunk and I got together earlier in the year to begin a local playgroup named Tea and Tots. The group is currently held on the last Thursday of every month at 126 on the Corner (125 Hei Hei Rd), which is owned by Hei Hei Broomfield Community Trust. The venue offers all sort of weekly events to get the com-

munity engaging. Tea and Tots gives children a chance to play and be creative in a safe environment while parents are meeting and supporting other parents in the community. Since we began in August, ABC Hei Hei are onboard with us. While it got off to a slow start, we now have about eight under 5s and several parents from the
community attend regularly. The monthly gatherings have become more popular as word has spread. We intend to hold the playgroup more often in 2018 and are looking for volunteers to make this possible. The aim of tea and Tots is to have our community mixing, meeting, supporting and having fun with one another. While this will involve Housing New Zealand tenants, the aim is to extend the invitation to the wider community as well. •Tea and Tots is held on the last Thursday of every month – Go along this Thursday, November 30, from 10am for Christmas crafts.
Cooks try out park’s new barbecue By Emily O’Connell BURNSIDE PARK’S new barbecue was put to the test at its opening on Friday. The Wigram Lions Club and the city council worked together to gift the electric barbecue and shelter to the Burnside community. City council head of parks Brent Smith said the total project cost $61,843. Club member Jack Tait said the barbecue took two and a half years of planning. He said when the club turned 100-years-old internationally, they were encouraged to “recognise that by leaving a
legacy to the community.” Mr Tait said the barbecue was also a celebration of the Wigram club’s 45th anniversary this year. He said he’s “very pleased” with how the barbecue has turned out. Fendalton-Waimairi-Harewood Community Board chairman David Cartwright said the barbecue was originally going to be in Avonhead Park but after a “push-back” from residents and sports groups, the city council found another location. Mr Cartwright said club has gone out of their way to fundraise for the barbecue. “It really complements that playground area there,” he said.

Meeting to discuss Denton Park’s future By Emily O’Connell DENTON PARK could be a step closer to becoming the site of the controversial $35.7 million Hornby mega centre. Tonight the Halswell-HornbyRiccarton Community Board will discuss reclassifying part of the park from a recreation reserve to a local purpose (community buildings) reserve. The board will also discuss amending the Denton Park management plan to accommodate the Hornby Library, Customer Services and South West Leisure Centre and when it should put the reclassification out for public consultation. Community board deputy chairwoman Helen Broughton said the board may “have little option but to pass it [the removal of the reserve classification], as it’s been delegated by the city council.” The Hornby Rugby Football Club has sent a letter to the community board stating its objection to the new centre being at Denton Park. The club does not want to break its lease, which runs until 2039, and it is concerned about additional traffic in the area. “It represents trying to put an

Mr Mora said the fenced off area is “an absolute mess” and is going to be a fire risk in summer. But Mr Hardy said the area behind the fence is maintained on an “as required basis in order to minimise disturbance to the soil”.

By Emily O’Connell GOLDFISH, BATH bombs and hot chocolate reindeer were among the items on sale at Villa Maria College’s year 10 market day on Wednesday. Students were placed in teams of two or three with one of their aims being to produce a product or service to sell on a market day. The course is part of the year 10 technology enterprise half-year module. Villa students have spent time learning about business marketing skills like meeting a need or opportunity, researching ideas that fit a particular target market and adding value to an existing product. They also learnt about finance, costing, advertising, promotion and selling – all in the hope of making a small profit if successful with their sales. The course aims to give students an opportunity to self-manage, work in teams, communicate and meet deadlines. Goods such as succulent planters, pamper packs, fluffy snow, stress balls, Christmas decorations, shower jellies, fun soap were also up for sale. By Sophie Cornish A COMBINATION of community groups are helping low decile pupils get the school camp experience. Year 5 and 6 pupils at Linwood North School recently went on camp to Living Springs with 50 per cent of their fees paid for. The Aorangi Sponsorship Programme coupled with Mitre 10 and Christchurch Girls’ High School’s Interact group raised funds to get the pupils to the camp. The sponsorship programme was set up last year and aims to get underprivileged children an outdoor education experience. Linwood North School principal Sandra Smith said it’s not common for her pupils to go to camp and they are only able to if community funding is available. “The children that went had an amazing time. The thing that stood out for the teachers was that the children who usually find school challenging, really shone and blossomed at camp and took on the challenges,” said Ms Smith. Living Springs chief executive Denis Aldridge said 50 per cent of schools going to the camp are decile 9 and 10. Schools that are decile 1, 2, 3 and 4 combined only make up 16

per cent. “That’s the very schools who need to be here,” said Mr Aldridge. Some “business clusters” are now sticking with the schools long-term and sponsoring camps every year, said Mr Aldridge. Last year, six low decile schools were able to attend the camp from community sponsorship. The programme is aiming for eight schools next year. The camps are based on outdoor adventure learning programmes which include low rope courses, tree climbing, farm visits and biking. “It gets them out of their comfort zone, gets them working together and gets them in a wholesome green environment,” said Mr Aldridge.

Creative wrapping adds intrigue to gifts Most of the malls offer a free gift-wrapping service, which is a great help at this busy time, but for those who prefer to wrap their own here are a few ideas to make gifts look unique and exciting.
Using newspaper or cardboard boxes as wrapping is another recycling idea, and you could add a festive look by tying them with Christmas ribbon. For long-shaped gifts, why not wrap them to look like a Christmas cracker. Place a tube of cardboard around the item, then put it inside a sheet of wrapping paper, secure it with tape then scrunch up the ends like a cracker and tie them off with coloured ribbon. Kitchen foil is another wrapping option. Being silver and shiny it already has a festive look, which you could enhance with bright-coloured ribbon. Make a container, such as a jar, tin or tray one part of the gift. Complete it with chocolates, nuts or biscuits and wrap the gift in clear cellophane tied with brightcoloured ribbon.

The first tip to make the job easier and the wrapping look more professional is to do the task on a flat surface – a table or a hard floor. Talented sports stars recognised at CBHS Syme caps off great year with award By Andrew King IT HAS been a year of success for Christchurch Boys’ High’s Rico Syme, capped off by winning the senior rugby player of the year award at the school’s prize-giving. The first-five/fullback started the year off in the school’s seventh XV, a team renowned for having a bit of talent for the first XV to pick from when needed. He was brought into the top squad due to injury and cemented his spot with a 50m dash to break the hearts of St Andrew’s College in the UC Championship. Syme was also one of only five South Islanders included in the New Zealand Schools side and played in the Crusaders under-18 development side. LAMB SALAD WITH BLACKBERRIES AND AVOCADO Ingredients 600g of lamb 1 serving oil spray 2 tsp dry mixed herbs 130g mesclun leaves, with herbs 16-20 blackberries 1 large avocado, halved, stoned and sliced ½ cup balsamic vinaigrette Directions Trim the lamb and snip the
edges, if required. This will prevent the lamb from curling during cooking. Spray with the oil. Combine the mixed herbs and black pepper and rub onto the lamb. Cover and refrigerate for at least 30min. Return to room temperature before cooking. Barbecue, grill or pan-fry for 3-6min each side, depending on thickness. Combine the salad greens, blackberries and avocado in a salad bowl. Thinly slice the lamb and toss with the salad and dressing.
HOW TO COOK LAMB LEG CHOPS ON THE BARBECUE Ingredients

1/4 cup white vinegar 2 teaspoons salt 1/2 teaspoon black pepper 2 cloves garlic, crushed 1 brown onion, thinly sliced 2 tablespoons olive oil 1kg lamb leg chops
Mix together the vinegar, salt, pepper, garlic, onion and olive oil in a large resealable bag until the salt has dissolved. Add lamb, toss until coated and marinate in refrigerator for two hours.
Preheat a barbecue or the grill to medium high. Remove lamb from the marinade and leave any onions that stick to the meat. Discard any remaining marinade. Cook chops for about 3-4min each side for medium or until cooked as desired.

Rangi Ruru student part of world champion team RANGI RURU Girls’ student Leah Zydenbos helped the New Zealand mounted games under-17 team win a World Championship in Auckland. She was up against some of the world’s leading equestrians at the event named Equitana. Teams from Australia, Ireland, and England held the next top spots in the competition. Rangi Ruru director of equestrian Pippa Young said it was a tough ride for the team with Leah, riding her borrowed mount Cheeky. “It was very tense in the final particularly, with two eliminations and a tie-breaker in the very last game of the competition,” she said. “The New Zealand under-17 team has been amazing over these few days. Leah and her teammates worked so hard to triumph over the riders from all the other countries, with Australia, Ireland and England being particularly strong.” Ms Young said Leah really excelled at the event. “She has been outstanding; an exceptional team member. “Her parents Sue and Rick, and brother Luke – all mounted games competitors themselves – are understandably very proud of their daughter too.” Leah was a key part of the school’s success at the South Island Schools’ Mounted Games held at the Ellesmere Showgrounds in late April this year. She and Lily Buckley won the South Island interschools competition. Leah has also excelled in a number of other competitions,

By Andrew King ST BEDE’S, Christchurch Girls’ High and St Margaret’s will each take to the field on Thursday to compete at the Condor Sevens in Auckland. All three qualified for the tournament by making the final in their regional competition. CGHS beat St Margaret’s in the girls final while St Bede’s were beaten by Timaru Boys’ High. The competition runs until Sunday and features 32 boys teams and 24 girls teams. It has been running since 1986. St Bede’s had a training session with the Canterbury men’s side on Thursday and coach Daniel Winchester said they were looking forward to getting stuck into their opponents. “We are expecting to come up
against some physical sides, but our fitness will come through. We have some boys that can expose the opposition,” he said. CGHS coach Jamie Livingstone said they are aiming to play an exciting brand of sevens to throw their North Island counterparts off. “We have plenty of experience in the team with half of them playing in their second or third tournament,” she said. Livingstone said they will aim to win all three pool games and from there “anything can happen”. The last time a South Island team won the tournament was in 2003, when Aranui High School – now Haeata Community Campus – beat Auckland’s De La Salle College.
